Baking for Dummies #5: The Mixers

 The Mixers

It's week 5 of Baking for Dummies! Welcome back everyone, and I hope everyone has started to dive into the wonderful world of baking! Today, we will be covering one appliance that is a bakers best friend – the mixer! For anyone that hates having to mix ingredients, this appliance solves all your problems (and your arm soreness)! Whether you are mixing cake batter, cheesecake, or any other form of a batter, your hand and arm can get tired very quickly. The mixer solves this problem by using beaters to stir your batter faster and more efficiently.

To start, a standard baking mixer is a machine that comes with a large mixing bowl and beaters. You can buy other forms of beaters separately for certain occasions (such as a beater to mix bread dough), but the ones that come with the machine usually do the trick for most basic recipes. The mixing bowl slides into the bottom of the machine and clamps to it, while the beaters are hooked onto the top. Most mixers lift up and down so you have room to add ingredients and will lock in place when tilted down. In addition, on the side of the mixer there are settings to how fast you want the beaters to turn. But be careful! Most of the time in baking you will only use the lowest few settings; you don’t want ingredients to fly out of the bowl or an overmixed batter!

Another type of mixer is known as a hand mixer, which has the same use and purpose as a standard baking mixer, but it is smaller and handheld. This device is usually used when dealing with smaller batters or more delicate batters. This machine is not connected to the bowl but is a smaller mixer that has a place for you to hold it in your hands, and the beaters attach the same way the standard mixers are attached. This smaller design makes it easier for you to mix and guide where you want the beaters to mix at, hence why it is used more for delicate batters or smaller quantities.

I would highly recommend investing in a standard baking mixer to start your baking journey and wait to buy a handheld mixer until you are dealing with more delicate batters. The baking mixer is a perfect addition to any baker’s kitchen, and in the long run is very worth the purchase. These cover just about the end of the basic appliances you will need to start baking, so next week we will dive into a different subject. Thanks for reading, and happy baking!
